With over 90 thousand people, San Mateo is one of the larger suburbs on the San Francisco Peninsula. Home to Tom Brady, Barry Bonds and Patty Hearst, as well as, NetSuite, Oodle, Sling Media, YouTube, and our personal favorite, The RayChel Realty Group – the city has given a start to some very successful people and companies. Thinking of making it the place for your family’s starter home (or trade up)?

First, the positives… San Mateo is the most diverse city in the county. There is a great range in price, value and demographics – leaving it full of opportunities to enter the market. Also, the city is currently developing their downtown with even more entertainment, shopping and restaurants.

The major negative we see is that San Mateo schools, as a group, are not as strong as the Belmont/Redwood Shores and San Carlos school districts. As we’ve discussed in earlier posts, schools districts are a major factor in your home’s resale value, and should therefore be important to buyers with and without children.
